Daylight-killing time

F-22 RaptorA group of F-22 Raptors were almost knocked out of the sky due to a computer glitch caused by the new daylight-savings time schedule which takes effect this year.

When the group of Raptors crossed over the IDL, multiple computer systems crashed on the planes. Everything from fuel subsystems, to navigation and partial communications were completely taken offline. Numerous attempts were made to “reboot” the systems to no avail.

Retired Air Force Major General Don Shepperd said that the Raptors were lucky that visibility was good and that they were travelling with refueling tankers. “They needed help. Had they gotten separated from their tankers or had the weather been bad, they had no attitude reference. They had no communications or navigation,” he said.

Scaaary. This change in the daylight-savings time schedule is expected to affect everything from high-tech military jets, stock trading and even airline schedules. Thank goodness we don’t have to deal with this daylight-savings nonsense here in Malaysia.

Both stories heard on the excellent Buzz Out Loud podcast. The blogjunkie hearts you, Tom, Molly and especially Veronica ๐Ÿ˜‰
