WTOTW: Find out where an image came from with TinEye

I share a web tip on my podcast every week. For #LOLshow Episode 17, the featured tip is TineEye.

Elevator pitch: TinEye is a reverse image search engine. It finds out where an image came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or if there is a higher resolution version.

Simply go to TineEye.com and upload or provide a link to an image that you want to search for. TinEye will then show you similar images and the web pages they are displayed on. TinEye is smart enough to show you images that were cropped, resized or even manipulated. Here are a few ideas on how to use TinEye:

  • Find out where an image came from, or get more information about it
  • Research or track the appearance of an image online
  • Find higher resolution versions of an image
  • Locate web pages that make use of an image you have created
  • Discover modified or edited versions of an image โ€“ especially useful for creatives who have their work stolen or used without attribution

Either way, TinEye is a great website to bookmark for the future. They even provide extensions for Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer.
