More robust footer widget areas for Headway

I recently got an email from a reader who wanted to know how I implemented my footer widget areas, and seen some similar requests in the Headway forums. With Headway, you can flip your widget areas horizontally to make a widgetized footer but it works best when you only have 3-4 widgets in them. I wanted to have more flexibility and so I injected 3 widget areas into my footer.

Screenshot for posterity, if I ever re-design this blog. Click for full-size image.

I didn’t have time for a full tutorial but hopefully you’ll find these code snippets useful:

blogjunkie.net custom_functions.php for Headway theme

blogjunkie.net custom.css for fat footer widget areas

Thanks for the easy to use widgetized footers code.

I do have a question. it seems to be ok except in my widgets area in the backend I don’t have a widgets area 2 ? I have a 1 and a 3 but no 2 is showing up.. any thoughts on this? it’s at http://www.theopensite.com

    Thanks

Hi Craig, if the widget area is not showing up in the backend it means that it is not being registered properly. Double check that you didn’t make any typos in the code.

I also updated the code in my pastebin to include an id for the footers so that they don’t clash with other widget areas:

Got any time to help me combine your tutorial with the one below so that I can have a widgetized-header too?

for some reason the footer widget area based on the code you gave is covering my ENTIRE post contents, its not relegated to the footer down below

Can you please delete my other comment and respond to this one? I forgot to tick the box to get emails to follow comments ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hey Jesse I’m sorry but this code snippet is for version 2.x of Headway. I’ve not used version 3.x of Headway so you’ll have to figure it out yourself ๐Ÿ™‚

I am using 2.0.13 , so it should work then right?

Hmm.. ok. Can you give me a link to your site so I can have a look? Also, have you tried asking in the Headway forums?
