Last Sunday, I was united with millions of other Malaysians for one cause: cheering on Lee Chong Wei in the London 2012 Olympics Men’s Badminton Final.
Chong Wei produced a brilliant effort, but alas he was edged out by nemesis Lin Dan.
“I’m sorry,” Chong Wei tweeted after the match. The weight of a nation’s hopes for its first ever Olympic gold must have crushed him.
Like many I was disappointed with the result but proud of the effort that Chong Wei put in. It was epic. It was a lesson in attitude and determination. And for that I salute you Dato’ for your effort and your achievement.
Congratulations on your silver medal and don’t be sorry. You did your absolute best and you are awesome!
The Telegraph had an excellent piece on the epic battle and the rivalry and camaraderie between Chong Wei and Lin Dan – London 2012 Olympics: rock star of badminton Lin Dan wins singles final to end Malaysia’s hopes of first gold medal
Congratulations are also in order to Pandelela Rinong for winning a bronze medal in Women’s 10m diving, making history as the first female athlete and only other Olympic medal winner outside of badminton. Hopefully Team Malaysia will have a better showing at Rio 2016.
