glimpses into my head

Brand affinity case study: Nike vs adidas

I’ve recently started to enjoy running and after increasing my distance and speed, I realized that I need a good pair of running shoes. So last week I went shoe shopping and I had an opportunity to observe myself making a buying decision for a rather expensive product.

I have 2 favorite sporting brands – adidas and Nike. Just the previous month I have purchased gear from both brands. adidas seemed to me like the more affordable brand and I probably own more adidas workout and training apparel than Nike. However the Nike Running sub-brand spoke to me more directly since I actually enjoy running. Continue Reading

Don’t expect me to work for free

Dear friends

Many of you know that I’m a WordPress expert for hire. Therefore I know you don’t mean any harm when you ask me to look at your blog when you have problems, or when you invite me for coffee to “discuss your website”.

However you should know that WordPress puts food on my table, and feeds this little guy.

In light of this knowledge, if you are asking for my help, it would be nice if you say right upfront that you’re happy to pay me (and not act surprised or peeved when I send you a price quote).

This way your site gets taken care of (like a boss), I get paid, Zack has a happy tummy and we can stay friends. Everybody wins!

Thanks a lot for your support and understanding. I value our friendship! Sincerely,

David

2011: Year in Review

It’s time for another review of the past year! So many awesome things happened, and I want to record them so I can look back to see how far I’ve come.

First, some perspective. 2010 was a great year. Can you believe that 2011 was even greater? God has blessed me so richly. Here are the details.

Family

My family is the most important thing in my life. Everything I do is for little Zack and Pei Chyi.

Pei Chyi and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary in March. This was followed a few weeks later with Zack’s 1st birthday. Zack’s birthday also marks a successful 1st year as parents. This is a Big Deal for me because there is no definitive manual on being a parent. I’m super glad that I didn’t screw this up. Continue Reading

Why I Will Never, Ever Hire A “Social Media Expert”

Peter Shankman wrote an epic post on Business Insider called Why I Will Never, Ever Hire A “Social Media Expert“. The 1st sentence tells you that you’re in for a good rant:

I was going to call this article “All ‘Social Media Experts’ Need To Go Die In A Fire,” but I figured I should be nicer than that.

The author’s ultimate point is that social media is not a magic pill that will make your company successful. To achieve success, the formula is “solid marketing and stellar customer service, just like it’s been since the beginning of time”. He goes on to explain how companies should be using social media – by being transparent, relevant, brief and by knowing your customer.

I realized this some time ago too. This is why I’m not all out to get more followers and fans and have been much more personal and quieter on Twitter and my blog. I don’t want to be blogging and tweeting for traffic and followers because I want to be blogging and tweeting for me. Social media is a means to an end, not the end itself. Social media is also not a popularity contest.

Then again, it is a social environment and in every one you’ll have those who try to be Mr and Ms Popularity. I guess it means there’s no escaping these guys. Luckily, my Twitter client of choice has a mute button.

This time last year

I’ve been re-living the moments up to Zack’s birth for the past 2 days.

3 Years

The past 3 years have just flown by, and they’ve been the best years of my life. Happy Anniversary Pei Chyi, I love you.

2010: Year In Review

2010 is drawing to a close. It’s been a great year for me. Yep, it was that awesome. To continue on from last year, I present a review of my 2010.

Personal Outlook

I think 2010 was the year I really discovered myself. I feel that more than ever, I have clarity about what I want out of life. Priorities have changed, and I’m not the same person I was 2-3 years ago.

I am not discontented. I am not chasing for ‘more’. I am not worried about things that don’t matter in the big picture.

I am now more purposeful. I am raring to go. I am different. I am grateful. I am happy. Continue Reading

Stuff I won in 2009

I’ve been pretty blessed in 2009 because I won quite a boatload of stuff. I don’t consider myself very lucky, but check out the haul I got this year:

1. Free photo shoot from Raw Pixel Studios from Twestival lucky draw. We used this for a recent maternity shoot, photos will be up soon.

2. DiGi Pimp My Broadband contest consolation prize – Free USB modem and DiGi Broadband USB modem.

3. HP Mini netbook for taking signing up to Microsoft SME’s Newsletter. Who would’ve thought I would win such a substantial prize from Mr. SoFTie? LOL

4. Craftsquatch Social Media Pillows from Sociax’s launch contest (still in transit from USA).

5. CampaignMonitor email credits and 3 awesome (geeky) tshirts from FreelanceShow’s Holiday Giveaway

6. Baby Muffin, arriving in about 3 months!

Not bad right? That’s about a prize every other month. Here’s wishing I’ll be as blessed in 2010! Happy new year everyone.

2009: Year In Review

I figured I should really start doing yearly summaries since I blog irregularly. Hence, I present to you David Wang’s year in review, 2009 edition.

Career

I started off 2009 as the Web Analytics and Social Media Manager for AGENDA. We had moved to our new office in Solaris Mont Kiara and my commute had grown longer. It was a good job that helped me gain the experience I needed to springboard my own business.

David's Dip

In June, I took Buzzmedia out of hibernation and started working full time on it again. This time, it felt like Buzzmedia 2.0 because I think I finally managed to get my business on the right track. Many people asked why I was leaving my job in the middle of a global recession, so I wrote down my answers why. Continue Reading

Peanut Butter Ritual

Peanut butter ritual

This is a picture of peanut butter scooped straight down one half of the jar. I’ve always wanted to do this since I read this Calvin and Hobbes strip.

I may be 27 years old, but I’m still a kid inside

The strip above found with Transmogrifier Search. I believe you can see the strip in the 10th anniversary book (right).
