The Home Work podcast is my new favorite podcast. Its a show for people who work from home, whether freelancer or telecommuter hosted by Aaron Mahnke and Dave Caolo. The hosts are super consistent with their schedule, the length of each shows is just right and the hosts offer very practical and useful advice, even for a experienced home warriors like me. It’s also great to listen to other people discuss the issues of people who work from home because you get that sense of community and that you’re not so alone. Do check out the show and other shows on 70 Decibels network.

Sennheiser PC36 review: High quality mid-range USB headset with microphone

I make quite a bit of Skype calls for work, and I occasionally make podcasts and screencasts which require me to record audio. I need a good multipurpose microphone headset that’s affordable, and having used the Sennheiser PC 36 for 2 weeks, I’m glad to say that it fits the bill. Here’s my uneducated and imbalanced Sennheiser PC36 review.

Summary: At USD60, this headset is an excellent mid-range USB headset with microphone for making VOIP calls, recording audio and listening to music. Highly recommended if you’re not a fussy audiophile.

Sound Quality

It’s not the best quality headset mic you can buy, but it’s not the cheapest either. The Sennheiser PC 36 holds it’s own against the other microphones that I have – a Logitech Clear Chat Pro, a MXL USB.006 condenser microphone and my MacBook’s built-in mic. Listen to how it sounds in this 5-minute audio clip I made.

I’ve been using WireTap Studio to record the #LOLshow podcasts because I wanted to be able to record myself and Skype into separate tracks. This tutorial shows a great (free) alternative, plus GarageBand provides lots more editing options than WireTap Studio.

The #LOLshow (the podcast that I do with John Lim, Niki Cheong and David Lian) is giving away a brand new BlackBerry Curve 3G. All you need to do is to listen. Quick! The contest will end soon..

I’m a regular panelist on a new podcast called Life Online, a.k.a. The LoLShow along with John Lim, Niki Cheong and David Lian. The 1st episode just went live earlier this week:

7Son Shoutout

J.C. Hutchins gives me a shoutout at the end of Episode 22 of his podcast for helping spread the word about his recent interview in the New York Times. It’s just a small mention, but it was a real honour to be mentioned alongside the likes of Cory Doctorow, Mur Lafferty, and Evo Terra. Glad I could help J.C.!

NY Times podcasting story

Two podcasters on my Podroll, Scott Sigler and J.C. Hutchins, have been interviewed by the New York Times (registration may be required) about podcasting. I love it that Scott records his podcasts in the closet.

“A lot of no-name authors like me are getting massive grass-roots exposure, and some of us are going to percolate to the top and get on the best-seller list, Mr. Sigler said.

I wish you great success, Mr. Sigler and Mr Hutchins. If you’ve not subscribed to their free podcasts, what are you waiting for??
