The other day my dad had been bugging me to exercise to ‘stay healthy’ and so Pei Chyi asks me, “Do you miss your flat stomach?”
After giving it some thought I answered, “No. Flat stomachs are overrated.”
Personally I feel that our society has come to equate a flat stomach with being fit and sex appeal. This inaccurate perception is perpetuated by the media who constantly glorifies stick thin girls and guys with washboard abs.
I wanted to have washboard abs once (when I was 17). I trained really hard to get them. And I almost achieved my goal.. but then I realized that it was an exercise in vanity. Being healthy was the side benefit–I wanted to impress the ladies.
I didn’t have washboard abs back then but I did have a flat stomach. It didn’t help me get girls. I know others who have flat stomachs which were a result of not eating and so they weren’t exactly very fit and healthy. My flat stomach didn’t land me any underwear commercials either. The only thing it was good for was so I could wear the same size pants from 3 years ago.
Since then I’ve gotten married and my waistline has expanded. I have a small tummy, but I don’t think you’ll find many people who will label me fat (I hope). I’m also reasonably healthy, passing my last blood test with flying colors. Unlike my flat stomach, my tummy actually has a few pretty good uses. Pei Chyi can rest her head on my tummy when watching TV. Also, I can rest baby Zack on it when carrying him, lightening the load off my arms.
To guys out there with washboard abs or flat stomachs, has it helped you get laid? Or get a girlfriend at least? Seriously, what’s the practical use of a flat stomach? I’d like to be convinced otherwise.
P.S. This is a tongue-in-cheek post so don’t take it so seriously!
